Events – Festivals – eyeplug.net/magazine https://eyeplug.net/magazine Wed, 21 Feb 2018 19:10:36 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Idlewild – Nick Churchill’s Interviews https://eyeplug.net/magazine/idlewild-nick-churchills-interviews/ Tue, 03 Jun 2014 14:43:02 +0000 http://www.eyeplug.net/magazine/?p=6340 Reformed indie rockers Idlewild are to play their only mainland UK festival date with an acoustic show at Purbeck Folk Festival on Saturday the 23rd of August.

The Scottish band released their last album Post Electric Blues in 2009 and since then frontman Roddy Woomble has released two solo albums, while guitarist Rod Jones has released material under his own name and with his band The Birthday Suit, most recently the excellent A Hollow Hole Of Riches in March.

Idlewild formed in 1995 and have released six studio albums to date including the breakthrough 100 Broken Windows (1999), The Remote Part (2002), which spawned the hit singles You Held The World In Your Arms and American English and Warnings/Promises (2005) with the top 20 single Love Steals Us From Loneliness (2005).

Singer Roddy Woomble released his first solo album My Secret Is My Silence in 2006. Produced by John McCusker and featuring Kate Rusby, Karine Polwart and his wife Ailidh Lennon, it topped the UK folk charts and was followed in 2008 by Before the Ruin, recorded with John McCusker and Kris Drever, featuring Radiohead drummer Phil Selway and Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub. His third album, The Impossible Song & Other Songs (2011) has a sleeve drawn by Mairi Hedderwick, creator of Katie Morag, and his latest solo record, Listen to Keep, came out in March.

Purbeck Folk Festival runs over the Bank Holiday Weekend, 21-24 August, on a 600-acre sheep farm in the heart of the beautiful Isle of Purbeck. Having won the Fatea Music Award for Countryside Festival Of The Year, it offers four days of fine music, great food, fancy dress, art interventions, film and magic on Dorset’s stunning Jurassic Coastline.

A firm favourite with young folks, families and old folkies alike, it also boasts a beer festival with 40 local real ales, 20 ciders and even a Dorset pils lager!

Idlewild join previously announced headliners Turin Brakes, Lloyd Cole, Eddi Reader, The South, Nizlopi, Chris Wood and Emily Barker & the Red Clay Halo. purbeckfolk.co.uk

Roddy, thanks for taking time out to field these questions …

We’re thrilled to be able to welcome Idlewild to Purbeck Folk Festival and you’ve got a tour of the Highlands and Islands planned, what’s the idea behind playing unexpected venues?

No grand plan really. We wanted to get out and about and do some gigs while we are working on our new record, to get back into singing the older songs and start trying out the new ones. I love the Highlands and Islands so any excuse to spend time there is fine by me. Purbeck is a place I’d never been to. So it’s all worked out really well.

Why is now the right time for a new Idlewild adventure?

It felt very natural to start working on an album. Five years is a good time away from anything. It was no more complicated than asking Rod if he fancied making a new and interesting Idlewild album. He did and that was the starting point. Over a year has passed since then and we are now about half way through recording, so it’s a good time to play some gigs.

How did the Idlewild regrouping happen after five years of doing other things?

Of course we all still kept in touch and saw each other, so it was just a question of organising some time to write songs. We always had a plan to make a new record, we just all needed a break from the cycle that we had gotten ourselves stuck into, which was bringing everyone down, and not helping the music.

How’s the new album shaping up?

Like I say, we’ve been taking our time with it, producing it ourselves in Rod’s little studio, and also up in Mull. It’s more experimental than other Idlewild albums, shades of a country/folk influence, but largely quite noisy and guitar based. Good tunes throughout though.

Will you approach the band in the same way as you did before, or are these older heads also wiser – I wonder if you’ll be wary of record company interventions for instance?

To me it is a new thing now, which is what is exciting. Rod and I are still the driving force, creatively at least, but having new members (multi instrumentalist Lucci Rossi, and Andrew Mitchell on bass) has made it feel different and taken the songs to a new and interesting place. Sales-wise we will probably do almost everything ourselves. We are very lucky to have plenty of fans, so we will sell the record directly to them.

There must have been some amazing experiences along the way, but if you had the time again would you do anything different?

It was a shame that the band basically fell apart when we at our most popular, commercially at least (2002), but we were young and didn’t really know what we were doing, so no, it was all a part of the learning process.

You and Rod have both said you’ll keep your other activities running alongside Idlewild, how will you know which is a solo song and which is an Idlewild song?

I write my solo material generally with Sorren Maclean and Idlewild songs with Rod, so it’s quite easy to separate.

How does running a band that backs your solo work differ from fronting Idlewild?

Good question. They feel very different from each other, to me anyway.

I think you’re playing the festival as an acoustic set up without a drummer, how have you adapted older material to suit the line up?

Playing acoustically is very natural to us as it is how our songs are written and developed. Colin Newton (drummer) won’t be with us for these shows, mainly because drums tend to force the songs into a place they don’t need to be, acoustically at least. They also make everything too loud!

I play most of my solo band gigs without drums so it’s a line up that I’m used to – lots of space for the melodies, and a nice laid back feeling.

Away from music what gets you up in the morning?

Children… and B&B guests!

What do you know of the Purbecks?

Not much, but there is a pub close by – the Square and Compass. I’ve always wanted to go there for a pint.

Lloyd Cole – Nick Churchill’s Interviews https://eyeplug.net/magazine/lloyd-cole-nick-churchills-interviews/ Tue, 08 Apr 2014 18:36:42 +0000 http://www.eyeplug.net/magazine/?p=6226 It’s 30 years since Lloyd Cole first troubled the charts. Not that he’s particularly celebrating the fact, but three decades is a milestone in whatever walk of life becomes a chosen path. Chart star, cult figure, folk singer, deep thinker, golf swinger (when last reported he was playing off 6.5, fact fans, but has been 5.3), whatever your view of Lloyd Cole, amusingly, he was once described as a ‘talkative bookworm’ , there’s plenty about the man to pique the interest.

This August he’ll make his first visit to the Jurassic Coast to play the Purbeck Folk Festival. Playing solo, he’ll mine his back pages for songs to play and maybe even try out a brand new one.

Having come to the fore fronting The Commotions and wracking up hits like Perfect Skin, Brand New Friend, Lost Weekend, Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken? and Jennifer She Said, Lloyd has since pursued a solo career that has seen him assimilate a range of styles from orchestral pop and sparse folk to synthesised soundscapes and edgy rock.

Through it all the quality of his writing, always literate, peppered with cultural references and laced with humour, has remained beyond question. In 1995 he scored a minor hit with Like Lovers Do from the album Love Story, co-produced by Stephen Street, desk jockey of choice for the likes of The Smiths and Blur.

Since the turn of the century he has explored a largely acoustic setting for increasingly folk-inspired albums such as Music in a Foreign Language (2003) and Broken Record (2010). Last year, he released Standards, his 10th solo album and only his 2nd since 1995 to feature a full band of musicians, including power pop godhead Matthew Sweet and sometime Lou Reed drummer Fred Maher.

Lloyd Cole headlines the Sunday night (24th) at Purbeck Folk Festival, which runs from August 21 to 24 at Wilkswood Farm, Langton Matravers, near Swanage. www.purbeckfolk.co.uk

But first he took time out from a hectic touring schedule to field a few questions…

Congratulations on the Standards album, as a listener it felt like Lloyd Cole had come home, how did it feel to make?

Well, the basics were done with Fred Maher and Matthew Sweet, so that was a return to something not done since 1991. But the recording was in LA. So pretty far from home and the mixing was in Bochum, Germany, again far from home. The album sounds pretty much as I wanted it to and maybe the palette is familiar, but the sound is a good deal more electric and, well much louder, than anything I’ve done before…

Was this the right time to make an electric album with a full band?

I guess so. Later finally asked me on…! After almost a decade in self-imposed exile as a would-be folksinger, I developed an itch I wasn’t expecting. It seemed that there were aspects to my old life in rock and roll that I missed. Tour buses and product managers, certainly not. But the interacting with musicians, the camaraderie and the joy of hearing one’s music enhanced and elevated by the aesthetic of others, absolutely.

You manage to reference a pretty good record collection’s worth of artists in the lyrics on the album, where do they come from?

They just surface. It’s what I do. Like a tic.

How did you imagine your musical career would pan out 30 years when you first started to make a Commotion?

Every album always feels like the last one. Even Rattlesnakes. My retirement plan was supposed to kick in after a 45…

The whole experience of making Standards was, for me, rewarding, perplexing, fabulously enjoyable and heinously stressful. Singing with a rock and roll band in the studio I felt exactly as I did in 1987 or 1995, and then I would see my reflection in the glass of the gobo and wonder who this old guy was…

What drives you to get up and write songs these days?

If I have an idea for a song that excites me, or an idea for an album that excites me, sometimes one leads to the other. I need some spark. There are enough Lloyd Cole songs out there. We don’t need any more unless they can have a chance to be great. I’m happy we got these songs finished, because I’m not sure I’ll make another record like this again.

What have you got in store for fans at the Purbeck Folk Festival in August?

The same as always with my solo show, songs from 1984 until 2014.

Just down the road is the Isle of Purbeck Golf Club, where Peter Alliss cut his teeth. Do you fancy a round?

I won’t have my clubs with me this time, but I will definitely bear that in mind for the future, thanks.

Are there any similarities between songwriting and playing golf, does one prepare you for the other at all?

Golf is what I do to escape the rest of my life. I try not to think about anything other than getting the ball in the hole.

Your previous album Broken Record was part-financed by advance sales and artists are making increasing use of crowd-funding to get records made, do you welcome the way the music industry is having to change? Is it a good thing?

No idea. I did it out of necessity. It’s a lot of work and I don’t plan on doing it again, but I’m thankful to those who made it possible.

What’s coming up for Lloyd Cole; any ideas for your next album?

Top secret, but there is plenty afoot. There will be at least two major releases, or re-releases over the next year or so. And I’m on tour all year, it seems.

Duggie Fields – Merry Christmas https://eyeplug.net/magazine/duggie-fields-merry-christmas/ https://eyeplug.net/magazine/duggie-fields-merry-christmas/#respond Fri, 05 Jun 2015 18:17:43 +0000 http://eyeplug.net/magazine/?p=4117 British ‘Maximalist’ Artist and Icon Duggie Fields kindly and generously issued this piece via a recent communication to Eyeplug Magazine. With a vivid, seemingly warm, festive theme, Duggie utilises vintage found images and re-renders them in a bold and montage layering style, that is constantly evolving and offers the viewer a statement on just how distorted modern day Christmas has possibly become. Image after image of traditional festive cliches jolt against stark silhouettes of homeless and lost people pushing their worldly belongings around in Corporate shopping baskets. It’s strong, bold, fun and warm and brightly makes a very strong lasting impression. Have a very Merry Christmas, Duggie Fields, you are indeed a one-off! Interesting sound manipulation too!

Shaved Fish Stage @WOWFest 2012 https://eyeplug.net/magazine/shaved-fish-stage-wowfest-2012/ https://eyeplug.net/magazine/shaved-fish-stage-wowfest-2012/#respond Fri, 05 Jun 2015 18:17:43 +0000 http://eyeplug.net/magazine/?p=3180 The Shaved Fish stage at WOWfest this August will be showcasing the new and exciting music on offer from the Isle of Wight and the rest of the England, with local bands and others travelling from places such as Southampton, London and Derby. There is an intentionally eclectic mix of music on offer from the curators of Shaved Fish, which is a result of their high drive to create a unique experience with a real WOW factor that differs from night to night…

On Friday expect to hear an acoustic orientated night with hints of folk and country. Saturday steps up to an Indie rock night with a very exciting new band at the top of the bill, and on Sunday to finish the weekend there is a full on Psychedelia night. It’s a great place to discover something new and enjoy the already excellent WOWfest vibe – created by headline acts such as UB40, Heaven 17 and Madeleine Peyroux, and top DJs including Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling and Bez from The Happy Mondays.

The team behind Shaved Fish are three island musician amigos Charlie Harris, James Thorpe and Shaun Barker. The trio have used their time and resources wisely to book some excellent music.

Charlie is a current university student, studying Music Management and Studio production, alongside juggling a few musical projects and producing artists and bands. Born and raised on the Isle of Wight he entered the music scene at the age of 13, playing in bands and attending local gigs, soaking up what the island has to offer. With a good knowledge of new and fresh music, along with a love for music from previous decades, it is his goal to create an exciting line-up for the Shaved Fish Stage.

James is a self confessed music snob, with a primitive vintage studio set up in the top floor of his Ventnor house and co-running a label under the name Red Squirrel with Shaun and Charlie, he is certainly a man to know if you’re in the island scene. James, along with the other two, entered music through playing in a band and live performance, but has followed his interests and ended up in the field of production and recording. His connection to the network of Isle of Wight musicians has proved valuable in the booking of some great music from the island.

Shaun and James come as a pair – it’s rare you’ll find them creating music more than 10 feet from each other. As teenagers playing in band together for 8 years and attending the same schools, their interests are naturally fairly mutual. Shaun’s involvement in music is, like the others, in production and engineering music and co-running the studio with James, his input into the music made is vital to the Red Squirrel sound.

For these three island lads, this is great personal development in their chosen industry. Not only have they had full control over the musical programming of the Shaved Fish, they also have to organise the whole show. They are doing this with the guidance of the older members of the team but they have met the job full on with energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment. Instead of running competitions like many other festivals, they did email auditions with MP3s and made a selection from thousands of applicants off the island and on the island. The line up is their choice of high quality emerging and current sounds from psychedelia, Indie, jazz to shoegazing and we are pleased to see they chose The Shutes, Pale Seas, JC & Angelina, Raff, Faber, Wos, Kris and Kaf alongside Hugh Verey (founder of Wight Salads now retired).

The Shutes: are a widely anticipated 4 piece Alternative Indie Surf band from the Isle of Wight, whose catchy riffs get mass audiences going in their home turf. Recently touring in Europe, The Shutes have released their new EP “Echo of Love” which will be part of their set on the Shaved Fish Stage at WOWfest 2012. The Shutes feature Rob Potter on bass, Chris Jones on drums, Michael Champion on vocals/guitar and David Champion on guitar.

Pale Seas: from Southampton, is a young band tinged with Americana folk jarred with English self-deprication and an intimate nocturnal sound to melt any heart.

Island born brother and sister, JC & Angelina, are well known on the island circuit and to festivals and clubs far afield. Their recordings are original material.

Experience the unique sounds of the Shaved Fish at WOWfest, which runs from 17th – 19th August. 2012. Tickets are available, still promotionally priced at £99 for adult weekenders, from www.wowfest.co.uk.

Talisman @WOWfest 2012 https://eyeplug.net/magazine/talisman-wowfest-2012/ https://eyeplug.net/magazine/talisman-wowfest-2012/#respond Tue, 16 Jun 2015 10:49:36 +0000 http://eyeplug.net/magazine/?p=3094

Talisman were one of the UK’s top Roots Reggae bands in the later 70’s and early 80’s.The band’s prowess earned them support slots with acts as diverse as Burning Spear, The Clash and The Rolling Stones. They have reformed with the original line up after 30 years apart to support the re-release of their classic roots single ‘Dole Age’ on a brand new album ‘Dole Age – The 1981 Reggae Collection’. One of Bristol’s finest live acts are back and ready to party once again.

Originally formed in 1977 Talisman were consummate performers constantly vying for the title of one of the country’s most popular live reggae bands. They toured the UK building up a loyal following and leaving memories of gigs that are still discussed to this day.

Until now the only way to hear Talisman has been to track down their two difficult to find singles from 1981, or their two later LPs, “Takin’ The Strain” from 1984 and “Jam Rock” From 1990. Now after nearly thirty years Bristol Archive Records have lovingly compiled this CD of the band at their peak in 1981. Not only does the CD contain the band’s two original 7” singles, but also eight carefully selected live cuts from classic shows at Glastonbury Festival and other infamous shows.

Hot on the heels of the critically acclaimed ‘The Bristol Reggae Explosion 1978- 1983’ Bristol Archive Records release ‘Dole Age – The 1981 Reggae Collection’ celebrated at their first Bristol show for 20 years at The Fleece in Bristol on 27th May 2011.

March 2012 sees the band re-release their first album “Takin’ the Strain”, originally release in 1984, as a CD (Deluxe Edition) and Digital Download. The nine tracks showcase variety and even include a soul tune, the Deluxe Edition also includes five live bonus tracks.

Talisman Interview, with Dennison from the Band:

1. What are your earliest memories of getting bitten by the music bug?

At the age of 15 I saw a guy at school playing  Jumpin’ Jack Flash’ on a acoustic guitar. I thought to myself ….I can do that.

2.Was your family background musical in any way?

In church I could hear the tones of my mother’s voice when she sang.

3. What were you original influences and how have they changed over time?

  • Listening to the radio at an early age in the Caribbean, mainly Country and Western from the US. I was hooked by the harmonies.
  •   In short, I have found my singing voice.

4. Have you ever been to the Isle Of Wight?

No.

5. Tell us about your live sound?

Roots and Culture for the mind, laced with humour.

6. How has your sound changed over the years?

We know what we’re doin’ now.

Black Roots @WOWfest 2012 https://eyeplug.net/magazine/black-roots-wowfest-2012/ https://eyeplug.net/magazine/black-roots-wowfest-2012/#respond Tue, 16 Jun 2015 10:49:36 +0000 http://eyeplug.net/magazine/?p=3089 Black Roots were a powerful and potent force in the British reggae music scene throughout the 80’s and left a legacy of no less than ten albums and more than eight singles before bowing out of the public eye in the mid-90’s. Hailing from the St Paul’s area of Bristol, the original eight-member band were formed in 1979 and quickly gained a large following by touring almost non-stop around the country, playing their brand of ‘militant pacifism’ roots.

Their debut album “Black Roots” released in 1983 was a highly acclaimed debut for Black Roots and saw them make their mark immediately on the national music scene. Their second album “The Frontline” included the title track “The Frontline” which had been composed at the request of BBC TV for a new television comedy series of the same name. Black Roots’ fourth album “All Day All Night” was produced by Mad Professor. The album “Live Power” was recorded at a gig at the Moles Club in Bath on 22 September 1988, which came about after fans asked for a live album, seeking to capture the power and strength of Black Roots’ tight, vibrant and entertaining stage performance.

In 1991 Black Roots and Neil Fraser released “Dub Factor: The Mad Professor Mixes” along with Black Steel and the horn section from the All Day All Night album. The tenth and final album “Dub Factor 3: Dub Judah & Mad Professor Mixes” released in 1995 finally brought the curtain down on Bristol’s finest exponents of reggae and without doubt, one of Britain’s best loved performing bands of the Eighties.

“If anyone tells you that there is no such thing as good British reggae, first tell them that they are a herbert and then listen to Black Roots.” – John Peel

Black Roots Interview, with Jabulani from the Band:

1. What are your earliest memories of getting bitten by the music bug?

My earliest memory was listening to a radio competition on RGA in Jamaica in the 60’s with artists such as the Wailers, Toots and the Maytals and so on.

2.Was your family background musical in any way?

No, only singing in church.

3. What were you original influences and how have they changed over time?

My original influences were by the Wailers and Burning Spear and over the years it’s more or less the same because I’m a roots man at heart.

4. Have you ever been to the Isle Of Wight?

I’ve never been but I would like to because I’ve heard that they will have a great festival this summer 🙂

5. Tell us about your live sound?

Our sound is a mixture of roots, melodic, spiritual and uplifting.

6. How has your sound changed over the years?

From militants to middle age spiritual fulfillment.

7. What have been the highpoint’s of your career?

Touring Europe with UB40 in the late 80’s.

8. And the low-points?

When we had a break.

9. What about the present day set up?

The 6 original members and 5 new additions that complete the jigsaw.

10. Thoughts on today’s music scene?

Very computerised without the sense of human feel.

11. What’s in the pipeline for the future?

We have a new album coming out in September and a tour coming to promote the album in the new year.

12. What can we expect for your WOWfest 2012 Show?

You will see Black Roots in a new rock reggae style with reggae at its heights, the way reggae should be played.

Neville Staple @WOWfest 2012 https://eyeplug.net/magazine/neville-staple-wowfest-2012/ https://eyeplug.net/magazine/neville-staple-wowfest-2012/#respond Tue, 16 Jun 2015 10:49:36 +0000 http://eyeplug.net/magazine/?p=3067

Best known as singer, toaster and composer with The Specials, and as one of the founding members of Fun Boy 3, Neville Staple is credited with changing the face of pop music not only once but twice.

Catch his show these days, and you’ll get a mix of old favourites from The Specials/Fun Boy three back catalogue plus choice solo releases.

Neville’s first involvement with The Specials was when they were still called The Coventry Automatics. He initially joined as their roadie but at a gig supporting The Clash, Neville took to the stage and never looked back. For a while, The Clash’s manager Bernard Rhodes managed The Specials. Neville used to toast of Bernie, “Bernie Rhodes knows. Don’t argue” at the beginning of the Specials hit single “Gangsters”.

When The Specials split up, Neville departed with Terry Hall and Lynval Golding, to form Fun Boy Three. They had a string of chart hits, some in collaboration with the all- female trio Bananarama.

It was officially confirmed on the 7 April 2008 that the Specials were to reform, and on the 6 September 2008, six members of the band performed on the Main Stage at the Bestival billed as the ‘Surprise Act’. By December 2008, the band had announced 2009 tour dates to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Throughout 2010 the band played many festival dates and toured the USA in the early autumn. After which Neville returned to the UK with a string of dates with his own incredibly tight band. 2011 saw Neville play various festivals including Glastonbury and Beatherder, also supporting Madness.

Neville’s autobiography, THE ORIGINAL RUDE BOY, was published by Aurum Press in the UK in May 2009.

The Selecter® – Starring Pauline Black & Arthur ‘Gaps” Hendrickson

“Too Much Pressure” released by this important and influential platinum selling band in Feb 1980 remains a classic touchstone for a generation of Ska lovers and the band are excited to announce they will be playing the album in its entirety plus a selection of other much loved Selecter tracks and some new surprises at concerts throughout 2011.

Mixing punk, ska and reggae, ‘Too Much Pressure’ successfully reflected the social and political issues of the early Thatcher years in Britain and gave a voice to disaffected youth across the racial divide.

The Selecter® fronted by the original singing duo of the female icon of the 2-Tone era Pauline Black & Arthur ‘Gaps’ Hendrickson deliver classic hits like ‘Three Minute Hero’, ‘Missing Words’, ‘On My Radio’, ‘James Bond’ and of course ‘Too Much Pressure’. New Selecter Album ‘Made In Britain’ & Pauline Black’s 2-Tone Memoir  ‘Black By Design’

2011 sees the return of one of the most vital, visceral and important Ska acts ever. Queen of 2-Tone, Pauline Black featured prominently in BBC4’s recent “Reggae Britannia” series, contributing to a 90 mins documentary and a live concert broadcast from The Barbican in London.

The Selecter® have written and recorded a new 10 track album ‘Made In Britain’, featuring covers of Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back To Black’ & a hugely popular anti-racist ska/reggae re-working of Woody Guthrie’s ‘All You Fascists Bound To Lose’  re-invented as ‘Big In The Body – Small In The Mind’, which is due for release in September 2011.
